Microsoft deprecates use of TLS 1.0 in Office 365, Lync Phone Edition Phones effected

Microsoft recently announced that they will remove support for Transport Layer Security 1.0 in Office 365 as of the 31st of October 2018. This means devices such as the Polycom CX3000, Polycom CX500 and Polycom CX600 will cease to work with Office 365,Skype for Business Online and Exchange Online as of the 31st of October 2018.

This means if you are using a Lync Phone Edition powered device - nominally the Polycom CX3000, CX500/600/700, the HP 4110, 4120 and Aastra 6721 and 6725 phones - you need to think about upgrading these to more recent devices. This change is designed to increase security within Office 365 environments – a by-product being older Lync Phone Edition devices (based on Windows CE) cannot support TLS 1.2 and as such will cease to work.

Even if you are using on-premises Skype for Business or Lync Server, but utilising Office 365 Exchange Online for email, this will render the device unable to access a calendar or voicemail.

Customers should look to replace CX series phones with Polycom Trio or VVX phones.

CX to VVX Transition

There is also changes in the on-premises Server product, including the removal of TLS 1.0 as a supported cipher suite in Skype for Business Server 2015. This can be remediated by technical staff, allowing TLS 1.0 to be used in an internal, on-premises environment. Using Office 365 however, we do not have this option and in this case the devices must be updated to more recent models that support TLS 1.2 and later.

If you're still using any of the CX family of devices, please contact us to help with the transition to the new devices!
